Oggi dalle 18:00 ci sarà Andy Ward a presentare in persona la sua mostra “The Lonely Firefly + Illustration for Fashion” nel nostro store di Milano in via Volta al numero 6.

Nel frattempo, abbiamo deciso di intervistarlo per cominciare a farvi entrare nel suo mondo. Il mondo favoloso di Andy Ward.

Atom Pastic: La tua arte ha una caratteristica molto magica, quasi fiabesca. Ci puoi parlare un po’ delle tue fonti d’ispirazione?

Andy Ward: La maggior parte dei personaggi che compaiono nei miei lavori trasmettono solitudine o isolamento, solitamente sottolineate da un certo ottimismo; personaggi indipendenti e speranzosi, pensierosi. E’ un approccio molto inglese alle cose, credo, cresciuto in me durante un’infanzia trascorsa nella campagna inglese con poco da fare oltre ad esplorare. Mi affascina la natura e il nostro rapporto con il mondo naturale. Credo che l’umanizzazione dei personaggi – come l’immagine della lucciola (nel titolo “firefly”) – sia un modo per avvicinare questi due mondi.

AP: Perché hai scelto “The Lonely Firefly” (“La Lucciola Solitaria”) per rappresentare questa mostra?

AW: Ho visto per la prima volta, di recente, una lucciola in una chiesa qui in San Zeno nel nord Italia. E’ stata un’esperienza molto commovente, abbastanza surreale. Mia nonna, poi, mi ha sempre parlato di lucciole quando ero piccolo. Lei abitava a New York e ci raccontava di quando, ancora bambina, si sedeva sui grossi scalini di pietra davanti alla porta di casa e osservava le lucciole fluttuare intorno a lei nelle calde sere d’estate.

Il viso di questo personaggio risale ad un ritratto che ho fatto di mia figlia Frenchie. E’ stato usato come personaggio per la prima volta da Custo Barcelona e ha trovato spazio anche nel lavoro che ho fatto per Tookata People: insomma, mi pare che viva ormai di vita propria. La lucciola è la sua più recente incarnazione, una rappresentazione della crescita di Frenchie e della sua scoperta dell’indipendenza. Quando mi avete chiesto se avrei voluto mostrare alcuni dei miei lavori ad Atom Plastic, stavo lavorando su quest’immagine e mi sembrava che sintetizzasse il mio lavoro al momento.

AP: Abbiamo alcune bellissime borse e portafogli di Tookata People con le tue illustrazioni nel nostro negozio di Milano e sappiamo che collabori anche con tanti altri marchi, tra cui Custo Barcelona. Qual è il tuo parere in merito alle opere d’arte commissionate?

AW: Tutto il mio lavoro viene commissionato. Ho la fortuna di lavorare con alcuni marchi di moda fantastici, che mi danno molta libertà e mi permettono di esplorare le mie idee. Senza dimenticare che il lavoro deve avere un appeal commerciale, visto che deve vendere. Questo è anche una sfida: c’è un equilibrio preciso da conseguire. Per me è importante che, pur avendo un valore commerciale, il lavoro abbia una profondità di concetto e che suggerisca una narrativa oltre alla immagine in sé, che non sia puramente decorativo.

AP: Come artista inglese in Italia, cosa pensi degli spazi espositivi nel nostro paese? E come si incastra Atom Plastic in un’agenda alternativa di spazi espositivi?

AW: Per essere sincero, gli spazi per mostre che ho visto fino ad ora in Italia (e la mia esperienza è ridotta), sembrano molto tradizionali. Da quello che ho visto, penso che la cultura d’educazione all’arte nel Regno Unito sia molto più ampia e che il mercato per esibire i lavori di illustrazione, ma anche quelli di arti più tradizionali, è molto maggiore semplicemente perché c’è molto più lavoro. Mi piacerebbe vedere molti più spazi espositivi, seguendo l’esempio di quanto Atom Plastic sta ora facendo. Atom Plastic ha un collegamento diretto con l’illustrazione tramite i prodotti che vende e le mostre sono una estensione naturale di ciò. Mi farebbe piacere vedere alcune gallerie indipendenti in Italia dimostrare lo stesso interesse per l’illustrazione contemporanea.

AP: I nostri lettori (e noi pure!) sono molto emozionati per la prima mostra di Atom Plastic, puoi svelarci un po’ di quello che potranno vedere dal 4 di febbraio in poi?

AW: Volevo trovare un tema che collegasse tutta la mostra e quindi ho deciso di portare solo lavori che ho realizzato per clienti nell’ambito della moda. In parallelo alle immagini, mostrerò alcuni dei prodotti che sono stati fatti con le stesse immagini, comprese magliette, vestiti, borse, giacche, ecc. Volevo mostrare non solo le immagini ma anche lo scopo per cui sono state create ed il modo in cui i designer di diversi marchi di moda hanno lavorato con i miei disegni, applicandoli alla moda. E’ una mostra di illustrazioni che definirei “funzionali”: illustrazioni che le persone appendono al proprio muro, che portano sulla schiena oppure appese ad un braccio.

Andy Ward is a talented freelance English illustrator working in Italy. His illustration work has appeared on airplanes and London buses, as layout for important advertising campaigns, sneakers and much more. International brands such as Tookata People, Custo Barcelona, MTV, Budweiser, Citroën, Mars and Mattel have requested his collaboration. You have probably already seen some of his stuff in our Milan store (do these gorgeous handbags and amazing wallets ring a bell?) but you’ll get to know much more about him in the solo-exhibition being held at Atom Plastic Milan. The exhibition will be opened with the artist’s presence on thursday the 4th of February at 6 p.m and will last until the 4th of March.

In the meanwhile, we decided to interview Andy so you can start entering his world. The fabulous world of Andy Ward.

Atom Plastic: Your art seems to have a very magical, almost “fairytale-esque” touch to it, can you tell us a little bit about your inspiration?

Andy Ward: Most of the characters that appear in my work have a feeling of loneliness, or isolation, which is usually underlined with a sense of optimism – Independent and hopeful characters, pensive. It’s quite an English take on things I think, instilled in me from a childhood growing up in the wild English countryside with little else to do but explore. I am fascinated by Nature and our relationship with the Natural world. I think the humanisation of characters such as the firefly image are a way of bringing those two worlds together.

AP: Why is “The Lonely Firefly” the image you chose to represent this exhibition?

AW: I saw my first firefly recently in a church in our village of San Zeno here in Northern Italy. It was a very moving experience, quite surreal. My Grandmother always used to talk of fireflies when I was a child too. She lived in New York and would tell us how she used to sit on a big set of stone steps by her front door as a child and watch the fireflies float around her in the hot summer evenings.

The face of this character originates in a drawing I made of my daughter Frenchie. It was used first as a character by Custo Barcelona then drifted into the work I do with Tookata People, she seems to have taken on a life of her own. The firefly is her latest incarnation. I suppose it’s a representation of Frenchie growing up and finding her independence. When I was asked if I’d like to show some work at Atom it was the image I was working on at the time and it seemed to sum up where I am with my work at the moment.

AP: We have some beautiful Tookata People handbags and wallets with your illustrations on them in our Milan shop and we know you’ve collaborated with many other brands also, such as Custo Barcelona. How do you feel about commissioned artwork?

AW: All of the work I produce is commissioned. I am lucky enough to work with some great fashion brands who allow me a lot of freedom to explore my own ideas but still, the work needs to have commercial appeal as it needs to sell. I find this a challenge too. A fine balance to strike. It’s important for me that although this work is commercial it has depth of idea and suggests a narrative beyond the image itself, that it is not purely decorative.

AP: Being an english artist in Italy, what do you think of the exhibition spaces in our country? And how does Atom Plastic fit into a somewhat alternative art venue agenda?

AW: To be honest, the exhibition spaces I have seen here in Italy so far (and my experience is limited) appear very traditional. I think the art education culture in the UK is much larger from what I’ve seen and the market for showing the work of illustrators as well as fine artists is greater as there is simply more work around. I’d love to see a lot more spaces show work in the way Atom is now doing. Atom has a direct link to illustration through the products it sells and the showing of work is a natural extension of that – I’d love to see some independent galleries in Italy show the same interest in contemporary illustration.

AP: Our readers are very excited about this first Atom Plastic exhibition (and so are we!), can you reveal a little about what they’ll get to see from the 4th of February onwards?

AW: I wanted a theme to run through the show and chose to show only work I have produced for fashion clients. Along with the images I will show some of the products made using them – including shirts, dresses, handbags, jackets, etc. I wanted to show not only the images but for also what purpose the images were created and how the designers at various fashion labels have worked with my designs and applied them to fashion. It’s a show of functional illustration – illustration that hangs on your wall, on your back, or from your arm.

I suoi artwork sono stati scelti per decorare aeroplani e bus londinesi, layout di importanti campagne pubblicitarie, sneakers, abbigliamento e molto altro. A richiederlo sono stati brand internazionali quali Custo Barcelona, MTV, Budweiser, Citroën, Mars e Mattel.

L’artista ha collaborato anche con Tookata People, brand di preziosi accessori in pura pelle e stampati con le sue fantasiose illustrazioni, che potete trovare in esclusiva italiana presso lo shop Atom Plastic Milano.

L’exhibition verrà inaugurata giovedì 4 febbraio alle ore 18, alla presenza dell’artista, che in tale occasione presenterà alcuni dei propri lavori (quali accessori e capi d’abbigliamento), incontrerà i fan e racconterà loro i segreti delle proprie opere.

Atom Plastic Milan presents “THE LONELY FIREFLY + Illustration for Fashion”.

An Andy Ward exhibition starting February the 4th.

Atom Plastic Milan presents the first of a series of exhibitions dedicated to some of the most interesting contemporary illustrators and designers in the Italian and international scenery.

Andy Ward, the renowned english illustrator who has collaborated with important American and British newspapers and magazines, such as The Wall Street Journal, Forbes, Time and USA Today, is the first guest in the new Milan store.

Ward’s artwork has been chosen to decorate airplanes and London buses, as layout for important advertising campaigns, sneakers and much more. International brands such as Custo Barcelona, MTV, Budweiser, Citroën, Mars and Mattel have requested his collaboration.

The artist has also worked with Tookata People, a brand of delicious accessories in pure leather printed with Andy Ward’s creative illustrations. You can find these accessories in Italy in the Atom Plastic Milan store alone.

The exhibition will open Thursday 4th February at 6 p.m. The artist will present some of his pieces (such as clothing and accessories), meet with his fans and tell unveil the secrets behind his works.
